Bitter cold returns to Western North Carolina after daylong respite

ASHEVILLE — Several school systems have closed today because of the snow.

Overnight accumulations of up to two inches in Western North Carolina prompted several systems to keep students, staff and/or teachers at home on Friday.

Among the systems to close are Asheville City Schools (optional teacher work day) and Buncombe County Schools (optional teacher work day).

For a complete listing of school closings, see the School Closings & Delays story on the Citizen-Times' homepage.

Here’s an interesting cold snap tidbit to throw out to your office mates – today’s high (the low 20s) will be lower than the average low for the day (26).

Not that that’s any comfort for Western North Carolinians finishing the third week of bitter, snowy weather more common to Michigan than the Blue Ridge Mountains. The big story today is the wind chill, which will make today feel like the temperature is below zero.

Today is going to be cold and stay cold, according to the National Weather Service.

As of 7 a.m., the temperature at the Asheville airport was a cool 12 degrees. Gusty winds there point to the blustery day it’s going to be all day in Asheville, meteorologist Doug Outlaw said.

Today will see snow showers, but mainly along the Tennessee border. Accumulations there could be an inch or more. Snowfall in WNC will begin to taper off going into Saturday and end Saturday night/early Sunday morning.

The high on Saturday will be in the mid 20s. The low Saturday night will be in the low teens. The high on Sunday will be in the upper 20s.

Skies should be dry from Sunday through the middle of the week, Outlaw said. “I don’t see any precipitation in the forecast through Thursday of next week,” he said.

Highs Monday and Tuesday will be in the mid 40s, and they will be in the upper 40s on Wednesday and Thursday, giving residents a brief reprieve from the Arctic blast.
